ChatGPT: Legal Concerns and Its Impact on IG Best Practices

Once upon a time, there was a legal seminar on ChatGPT legal concerns and the impact on information governance best practices. The seminar was attended by a young IG professional who was looking for love. She was bored with the seminar and wished it could be more interesting. Suddenly, she had an idea! She asked the speaker to give her a summary of the seminar as if it was a romantic comedy. The speaker was surprised but decided to give it a try. He started talking about how ChatGPT is an AI tool that creates generative responses rather than automated outputs. He then talked about how the use of an AI tool for law-related services raises a host of regulatory and ethical issues, and how its use will impact best practices in the information governance space. The young lawyer was impressed by the speaker’s wit and intelligence, and she walked away with useful knowledge about ChatGPT and emerging best practices to share with her employer. All participants lived happily ever after.

Speaker:  John Isaza is a Partner at Rimon Law, where he heads the Privacy, Records and Information Governance practice from his office in Boston. He is the co-founder of Information Governance Solutions (IGS) featuring Virgo™, a cloud-based software for records information management and global research, sold to Access Corp in January of 2020. Mr. Isaza is one of the world’s foremost experts in the field of privacy and information governance. He has developed global privacy, information governance and records retention programs for some of the most highly regulated Global 1000 companies. He is co-author of 7 Steps for Legal Holds of ESI & Other Documents, a contributing author to the ABA’s Internet Law for the Business Lawyer, 2nd Edition, as well as Editor-in-Chief and co-author of Handbook on Global Social Media Law for Business Lawyers. Mr. Isaza is past co-Chair of the American Bar’s Social Media Subcommittee as well as the Consumer Privacy and Data Analytics Subcommittee, past Chair of the IGP Certification Board, and a Fellow of ARMA International. John is a graduate of the University of Florida (with High Honors in 3 years) and Boston College Law School. He is also fluent in Spanish (his native tongue), proficient in French and German, and currently learning Russian.
